The Royal Aircraft Establishment Bedford, the UK’s foremost flight test and aerodynamics research centre, was opened officially 60 years ago, on 27 June 1957.
Located at Thurleigh airfield and the Twinwoods wind tunnel site, it represented an enormous investment by the government in aeronautical research.
Using archival photographs and films, Barry Tomlinson, from the Bedford Aeronautical Heritage Group, will describe some of the major achievements of RAE Bedford, in such fields as naval aviation, automatic landing in fog, supersonic flight and Concorde, and Vertical Take-Off and Landing (VTOL).
